Your tires have absolutely zero traction in powder snow. It happens most often while snowing or just after it's snowed, while the snow is still all powdery and fresh. Unless you're absurdly careful - like, to the point that driving several miles takes nearly an hour - it can happen to anybody, ESPECIALLY cars without front or 4-wheel drive. You may underestimate the traction tires have in snow.
